So happy we can now use the r-word.
So happy we can now use the r-word. NPR finally admits that “remdesivir, a highly effective COVID treatment, is a last resort for providers”. Doctors have consistently talked about zinc and remdesivir are highly effective against covid when used early. However NPR states that the drug did not gain traction because of health care providers? Really? I believe the media mainly SOCIAL MEDIA could have allowed this conversation to take place. Posts and videos were taken off FB and YouTube because they mentioned remdesivir or monoclonal antibodies.
AND THE DRUG IS SAFE! The main drawback is that it takes a long time and a lot of staff to provide to a patient. Maybe we should not have forced doctors and nurses out if they did not get vaccinated?
Dr. Oz was quoted several times saying you go to war with the army you have not the army that you wish you had. A major flaw in our medical system is that we don’t push proactive medicine but focus on reactive medicine.

Then an older drug, remdesivir, emerged as an effective option.
Over the past year and a half, the drug — sold in the U.S. under the brand Veklury —had been used in hospitals to treat very sick patients with COVID-19. But new datafrom the drugmaker Gilead showed that remdesivir could also help high-risk patientsavoid the hospital. In other words, it could help patients with medical conditions likeimmune suppression and diabetes ward off severe COVID-19 disease.
While the drug had shown mixed results in studies as a treatment for hospitalizedpatients, it has proved surprisingly effective, according to Gilead's data, at treatingpatients early in the course of the disease. Public health experts say it could beenormously useful at a time when other early COVID-19 treatments — such asmonoclonal antibodies and COVID pills — are unavailable or in short supply. But thedrug hasn't gotten much traction among health care providers because it takessignificant time, staff and resources to give out.
The results of Gilead's study on using remdesivir early in the course of illness, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, were "truly dramatic," says Dr.Jane Kelly
Other traits add to remdesivir's appeal. It's the only early treatment available tochildren under 12. Plus it works against omicron – while some other early treatmentoptions do not. And, while other early treatments are in short supply, there's plenty ofremdesivir to go around.
Federal agencies now recommend remdesivir as one of four options for treating earlyCOVID-19. These medicines, when started within five to 10 days of the onset ofsymptoms, could help patients who might get very sick from COVID-19 — such assome patients with cancer or chronic lung disease — rid their systems of the virus.
Still, experts say, remdesivir has been a crucial option in this omicron surge, whenvirus mutations knocked out a few other treatment options. As the virus evolves, theoption to use remdesivir could be key again.
Compared with other outpatient options, the drug takes more spaceand staff to infuse
To accommodate the remdesivir treatments, the Duke clinic had to expand their hoursfrom five days a week to seven. "You don't want someone to get Dose 1 on a Friday, and wait 72 hours [to get the next dose]," says Wolfe.
